Two young men registered Tissa Jayasinghe Associates (TJA), a business partnership, in 1980.  TJA started its journey with ship repairs and civil engineering construction work, and today, TJA specialises in the fabrication and erection of steel structures, machinery, piping for gas, steam, and air services, as well as mechanical maintenance work.

In 1990, their business diversified into the wood processing industry with the inauguration of a rubberwood processing plant at Bandaragama: a good friend and business partner, the late Eng. C Dassanayake was instrumental in designing the plant with pressure impregnation of the wood, making the products acceptable to leading furniture manufacturers such as Singer Sri Lanka.
